Skin Tags Q & A

What causes skin tags?

Skin tags are small flaps of skin tissue that hang from a connecting stock of tissue. While the exact cause of skin tags isn't always known, medical experts find that you're more likely to develop them if you:

  • Are overweight or obese
  • Have diabetes
  • Wear tight-fitting clothing
  • Are female
  • Are over age 50

Where do skin tags develop?

Skin tags are more likely to develop in areas where your skin folds or where clothing rubs. These areas can include your:

  • Underarms
  • Neck
  • Chest and breasts
  • Groin

You can often prevent skin tags from forming in these areas by avoiding snug-fitting clothing or undergarments (including bras) that can cause friction against your skin. Sometimes rubbing from jewelry can cause skin tags, too.

How are skin tags removed?

You have options when it comes to skin tag removal. For instance, Dr. Magee can numb the treatment area and cut away the skin tag with a scalpel. In some cases, she may freeze it off through cryosurgery, or burn it off with an electric current.

No matter which treatment is right for you, the entire process is quick, even if you need multiple skin tags removed. You can receive treatment during your lunch break or on your way home from work.

Because skin tags are tiny, you don’t have to worry about any scarring post-removal. Most men and women have visibly smoother looking and feeling skin after they have skin tags removed and the treatment area heals.

Do skin tags grow back?

No. Once Dr. Magee removes your skin tags they're gone for good. But it's possible to have new skin tags develop in the same area. As such, it's important to be aware of anything that may be causing friction in the area, whether it's skinfolds, clothing, or jewelry.

Dr. Magee can help you determine what may be triggering skin tag formation so that you can work on preventive measures in the future.
