Laser Hair Removal Q & A

What does laser hair removal do to hair?

Your hair grows in cycles, and each hair may be at different points at any given time. Laser hair removal is most effective during the early stage (anagen) of hair growth. Dr. Magee uses the most advanced laser hair removal system: the LightSheer® INFINITY™.

With each treatment, the concentrated beams of laser light are attracted to hair follicles deep below the surface of your skin. As those follicles absorb energy, they're instantly destroyed.

That doesn't mean that your hair is going to fall out on the spot, although sometimes a few hairs do pop out. It usually takes at least a couple weeks for treated hair to loosen up and fall out, which is why it’s important to exfoliate the area gently each time you shower.

Is laser hair removal permanent?

Laser hair removal is permanent, but you need to know what you should expect. With each treatment, as hair grows back, it's much lighter and finer. Those thick, coarse hairs should be gone for good.

While you may continue to have some hair regrowth long after your laser hair removal treatments are over, anything you see is going to be much less noticeable than what you had to start.

In some cases, hormone fluctuations —  which are a natural part of aging —  may cause new hair growth. If this happens, it's not a big deal. Dr. Magee can provide spot treatments later on.

How many laser hair removal sessions do I need?

Most men and women require at least three laser hair removal sessions, although it's common to need a series of five to seven sessions. Plan to wait four to six weeks between appointments to give your treated hair enough time to fall out.

The further along you go through your treatment plan, the longer you can wait between sessions. Dr. Magee lets you know an ideal timeframe for booking your follow-up session.
